Our Story
In 2010, following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, Pastor Stan Buckley of Madison, Mississippi, led his church to take action. What began as a vision to help families living in tents quickly turned into a calling to build something lasting—a sustainable community rooted in both physical restoration and spiritual hope.
During an early trip to Haiti, Stan met a young man named Thomas living in a tent city. When asked if he’d want to move to a place with proper housing, medical care, and education, Thomas responded, “Of course. But that’s impossible.” In that moment, Stan felt God whisper two powerful words: “But God.” That phrase became both a promise and a mission.
By 2011, construction began on 17 acres in Galette Chambon. In the years since, that land has grown into a thriving community—with medical clinics, schools, homes, churches, agriculture, and clean water. A second Hope Center followed in Thoman. Today, hundreds of Haitians are employed full-time, and thousands of lives have been touched through healthcare, education, job creation, and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
In 2011, Stan stepped away from full-time pastoring to launch But God Ministries, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Expanding the Mission:
Mississippi Delta
From the beginning, BGM hoped to one day replicate this model of sustainable development in the United States. In 2016, that dream took root in Jonestown, Mississippi.
Since then, we've opened a 6,000 sq. ft. Hope Center, refurbished and launched local businesses, built a 4,000 sq. ft. Economic Development Center, and established programs for education, housing, legal aid, healthcare, and spiritual growth. We now employ a team of full-time staff from within the community, and we continue to host mission teams from across the country to partner in this work.
From Haiti to the Mississippi Delta, But God Ministries exists to restore what’s broken, empower what’s possible, and point every person to the ultimate source of hope—Jesus Christ.
